Green Grotto Caves in Runaway Bay is one of the most famous and unique natural tourist attractions in Jamaica. In fact Christopher Columbus’ first place to discover in Jamaica was Runaway Bay in 1494, and was named so, due to the slaves that escaped from their slave owners via the Green Grotto Caves (formerly known as ‘Runaway Bay Caves’). However, it wasn’t until the 18th Century that the Green Grotto Caves became an official tourist destination.
On our Green Grotto Caves Adventure Tour you will get a guided tour through the stunning massive limestone cave, which has numerous rock formations, including stalagmites and stalactites, and overhead ceiling pockets. In addition, there is an underground tunnel that links the caves to the beach in Runaway Bay. The caves have a rich history, which began with the Taino Indians who used the caves for shelter; as well as a hiding place for runaway slaves to hide from their masters, and Jamaican rum during WWII by the Jamaican government, etc.
